Free Crochet Pattern for Baby Blanket – Square Blanket

Square Baby Blanket

This free crochet pattern for a baby blanket is a great beginner project.

Finished Size: Approximately 32″x32″.

Yarn: Worsted weight yarn, shown in Bernat Cotton Tots.

Hook:  US hook size H (5.0 mm).

Notions: 4 stitch markers.

Gauge: Not critical for this project.

The pattern can be worked in a variety of different ways. Just a few suggestions: Work most of the blanket in the main color (MC) and add a contrasting color (CC) just for the border. Or change yarn every one, two, or three rounds. The following sequence was used for the blanket shown: 5 rounds multicolored,  2 rounds yellow,  5 rounds multicolored,  2 rounds green,  5 rounds multicolored,  2 rounds yellow,  5 rounds multicolored,  1 round shell stitch in green.

BLANKET

With MC, make an adjustable ring or chain 4, sl st into the first chain made to for a ring.

RND 1: Ch 2 (counts as dc), work into the ring: dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, dc, sl st to top of ch-2 to join – 16 sts total.

If the adjustable ring was used, pull tail to tighten the ring.

RND 2: Ch 2, dc in next dc, [(2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch-1 sp, dc in next 3 dc] 3 times around, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch-1 sp, dc in last dc, sl st to top of ch-2 to join – 32 sts total.

Place stitch markers in ch-1 sps to mark corners of the blanket.

RND 3: Ch 2, dc in next 3 dc, [(2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch-1 sp (move stitch marker into new ch-1 sp), dc in next 7 dc] 3 times around, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch-1 sp, dc in next 3 dc, sl st to top of ch-2 to join – 48 sts total.

RND 4: Ch 2, dc in each dc to next M, [(2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next market st (move M into new ch-1 sp), dc in each dc to next M] 3 times around, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch-1 sp, dc in remaining dc, sl st to top of ch-2 to join – 64 sts total.

Repeat last rnd for total of 26 rnds, or until desired size. Fasten off.

BORDER

Shell Border (shown): Join CC in any ch-1 sp, ch 2, 2 dc in same ch-1 sp, *sc in next dc, [skip next 2 dc, 5 dc in next st, skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc] repeat to next ch-1 sp, 5 dc in next ch-1 sp; repeat from * 3 times around, sc in next dc, [skip next 2 dc, 5 dc in next st, skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc] repeat to next ch-1 sp, 2 dc in same ch-1 sp as first 2 dc. Fasten off.

Reverse Single Crochet Border: Join CC anywhere along the side of the blanket, ch 1, *reverse sc in each st to next ch-1 sp, 3 reverse sc in next ch-1 sp; repeat from *3 times around, reverse sc in remaining sts. Fasten off.

FINISHING

Weave in ends, block.
